Alberta choses sport and active living ambassador

Erica Wiebe, an Olympic gold medal wrestler has been appointed Alberta Ambassador for Sport and Active Living.

She is the province’s first Ambassador and will work on promoting the value and importance of sport and physical activity. Wiebe plans to also encourage under-represented populations, which include women and girls, to partake in sport and physical activity. She will also share her experiences and stories with sport and recreation sector stakeholders.

“I’m excited to take on the role of Alberta’s Ambassador for Sport and Active Living. I look forward to being an advocate for improving sport and active living opportunities for Albertans in every community across the province,” said Wiebe.

Her wrestling career began in high school and she went on to win gold in the 2014, 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Weibe lives and trains in Calgary. During her ambassadorship, she will continue to train for wrestling events, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Summer Games.

Her ability to connect, inspire and elevate is what makes her truly unique. She is so passionate about both youth and everyday Albertans being active and participating in sport. We thank her for being a true champion of health and wellness in our province,” said Leela Sharon Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women.
