Open Farm Days starts this weekend

More than 150 farms in Alberta will host open houses, tours and a chance for visitors to buy locally grown and homemade products at this years Open Farm Days running, August 17-18.

“Open Farm Days is a fantastic event that gives Albertans a chance to get to know neighbours and learn where our food comes from. It’s also a great way to buy local and support our rural economy and agriculture sector, with fun events for the whole family,” said Tanya Fir, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism.

Something new this year is that six Alberta breweries have developed a craft beer called the Open Farm Days cream ale. It boasts Alberta grown wheat, oats, corn and haskep berries and is already available at participating breweries and a few restaurants.

“Alberta has some of the world’s best farmers, food producers and processors. Now is a great time to step up and show support for Alberta’s agriculture industry. I encourage Albertans to buy local food, meet a farmer in their community and get to know the people who put food on their tables,” said Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

There is a total of 29 culinary events and 11 tours this weekend, along with corn mazes, hayrides and mini golf.

Admission into farms is free, but some activities may cost and it may be good to have cash on hand.
