Public screening of FGM documentary takes place tomorrow night

The documentary, In the Name of Your Daughter, touches on the issue of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Alberta’s minister of culture, multiculturalism and status of women, Leela Sharon Aheer is hosting the free, public film screening on November 27. This screening is part of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, which began on November 25; the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.

After the screening, there will be a panel of experts discussing FGM and what could be done in the province to prevent all forms of violence against women and girls.

“Our campaign this year marks a sombre milestone. December 6 will be the 30th anniversary of the massacre at l’École Polytechnique, where 14 women lost their lives because of gender-based violence. In Canada, we recognize its importance as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Our government will take part in public vigils across the province to honour the women we lost that day,” said Aheer.

She encourages everyone to take the opportunity to use resources shared throughout the campaign or take part in an event.

“When we educate ourselves, we become active members in ending gender-based violence.”

The campaign ends on International Human Rights Day, December 10.

The screening takes place November 27 at the Amiskwaciy Theatre (second floor) of the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton. Opening remarks begin at 7 p.m. with the screening commencing at 7:05 p.m. The panel discussion will start at 8:30 p.m.

The film is rated PG for disturbing content.
