Students invited to upcoming info sessions to further their education
Grade 9 students are encouraged to attend upcoming info sessions, to learn how two unique programs will give them a nice post-secondary advantage.
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) says current Grade 9 students choosing to attend Salisbury Composite High or Bev Facey Community nigh next year can learn more about enhancing their academic standing through information sessions on the Advanced Placement (AP) Program and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme.
The AP program at Bev Facey provides an academic rigour to prepare students for post-secondary. The program offers challenging courses that parallel and expand on the material covered in Alberta Education’s academic course streams. Students can choose to take full AP course loads or individual courses based on the students interests and strengths, EIPS noted in a press release.
“We’re proud to offer this internationally recognized program to our students,” said Cherum Orr, Assistant Principal and AP Co-ordinator at Bev Facey. “Through the program, students at Bev Facey can push themselves to greater heights, and stand out among the competition in the post-secondary application process.”
In addition, the AP Capstone Diploma is new to the AP program and Bev Facey is the only high school in the Elk Island area to offer Capstone.
Salisbury High offers the IB Programme, which helps develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world thorugh intercultural understanding and respect.
“The IB Programme helps promote independent thinking and encourages students to navigate their own learning path,” said Michelle Wyman, the IB Co-ordinator at Salisbury Comp. “Being involved in IB can help smooth a path to some of the best post-secondary institutions in the world.”
The Advanced Placement Open House & Post-Secondary AP info session takes place January 30, from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Bev Facey Community High.
The International Baccalaureate Programme info session will be held February 5 from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Salisbury Comp.
